Update from the World Stage
Alpine snowboard racer, Ben Heldman reports on his recent experience racing in the Snowboard World Cup:
On January 14th we had our first Slalom race of 2025 in Bad Gastein, AUT. Going into this race I felt extremely confident in my riding and the training we had done before this race. The snow conditions were icy and aggressive snow but that keeps the course is great condition throughout the race and opens the door for endless possibilities.
My first qualifying run had 2 small mistakes, but overall the speed was solid and I was sitting 11th on my course and 0.23sec behind 16. This gave me a good feeling going into second run as I just needed to have a clean run and I would be in. Second run I kept to the same plan and had a one small mistake as my arm got caught in a panel but I didn’t lose too much time there, and got the last spot in finals qualifying 16th. Overall I was not overly too happy with my riding after qualifying I knew I had a lot more potential and could be a lot faster if I was able to stay clean. This gave me a lot of confidence going into finals, ranked 16th racing against the top qualifier Maurizio Bormolini who is the overall World Cup leader, I was a big underdog and I loved that. No one else knew or was expecting to see what I was capable of doing except for me and my team and I was ready to surprise everyone.
Going into finals I had a clean plan and was confident in it. Stepping into the start gate under the lights seeing the huge crowd below and the noise it was a bit overwhelming but I kept my focus blocked out the noise, it was just me and my plan. I had a lot of mistakes in the first 10 gates but was able to keep the fall line and did not lose too much time, going into the flat sequence before the bottom roller I was right with him and committed to a very aggressive line and was able to carry a lot of speed into the bottom 4 gates to win my heat. Crossing the line I looked over my shoulder to the TV to see if I won and as soon as I saw green under my name I pretty much blacked out. The feeling was indescribable to have that big of an upset in that environment with all my teammates cheering me on, it couldn’t be better than that.
Heading up for the next round my heart was racing but I was happy and so excited to race American Cody Winters. I knew going into that race that Cody is a very strong Slalom rider and that I needed to put down a very strong run to have a chance and that’s exactly what I did. I had a small mistake on the top but my run was a lot cleaner but I lost by 0.08sec. I was a bit bummed to have lost especially being so close but that was also the beauty of it. I got to race a friend on the world stage and it come down to 8 hundredths of a second, that is the best way I could go out. And then seeing him go on to get his first World Cup podium was pretty sweet moment. A slope like Bad Gastein is very difficult because it’s been hosting races for 25 years now so new guys don’t have the same experience, but it’s steep and short so there is always possibility’s with good riding. I feel extremely strong in my riding, technique, and mental strength that I will carry that into my next Giant Slalom races in Bulgaria this weekend on Jan. 18 & 19.
Congrats on your 8th place finish at Bad Gastein, AUT. This is Ben’s first top 10 finish in a World Cup!
