Coaches’ Corner

This weeks edition was provided by Coach Jack McIlraith, U14 SOD Supervisor.

Making the most of a training day:

  • Wearing your downhill suit for training (U12 and older, every day) will help you feel more comfortable on race day and you will be ready if your coaches ask you to train in your suit.
  • Make sure you keep your skis waxed and sharpened for training days as well as races.
  • Focus on small achievable goals. Breaking up difficult challenges into smaller chunks will help you measure and celebrate progress throughout the day.
  • Take a break to help keep your energy up and stay warm.
  • Have fun throughout the day Respect the process. Development and progress do not happen immediately. Be a student of your craft.
  • Support your friends throughout the day and stick around for Athlete of the Day awards and cheer on your teammates.

Courtesy on the hill:

  • When at a race it is always a good idea to take some time at the end of the event to thank the host clubs race crew. They are volunteers and without them your races would not happen.
  • Please remember that when you are abroad at a training camp or race that you are representing your club and your province and should be respectful to all resort operators and staff that you interact with.
  • Always put your skis and poles on the rack when you go inside for a break or lunch.
  • Make sure you throw out any garbage and leave the area clean after your break or lunch.
  • Be respectful of others and stay organized in the lift line, and always listen to the lift operators.
  • Make sure you leave boot bags, jackets, or other gear in the proper place and out of the way whether inside or out on the hill.
  • Be aware of others on the hill – give others lots of space if you need to pass them or when starting your run.
  • Make sure you help clean up the training environment at the end of the day.
